      UNSPINNING THE NEWS

April 19 2008: Last week, AP and all its outlets certainly seemed to be reporting that Raul Castro had just "decreed" that Cubans could own their homes. Anyway, it seems to have so seemed to the Chronicle head writer who capped the story: "Raul   continued

Any American Can Go To Cuba As His Own Reporter
This document explains the law relating to gathering news and traveling in Cuba, and argues that any American can go to Cuba as his own reporter without asking anyone's permission. This is an existential right acknowledged and guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution, and by the so-called "Cuban Travel Ban."

Cubans Choose Socialism
This is a very deep account of a limited but revealing survey of 100 ordinary cubans conducted during a 6-week journey in Cuba in 2002 about a petition said to have been signed by 98% of the cuban electorate (just 2 weeks before I got there) to lock socialism into their constitution. This was after Washington had accused Cuba of bio-terrorism involvement and after Jimmy Carter refuted the charge from Havana but also urged Cubans to adopt US Style "freedom and democracy."

SOUTH AMERICA COMPARED TO CUBA:
From July to November of '04, the author toured eight South American countries to compare the "emerging western style free enterprise democracies" to Cuba, because, as members of the OAS and the UN, these countries are regularly armtwisted into censuring Cuba as the only country in the hemisphere still not "free." In three extensive documents listed below, the author confirms that, logically, it should be Cuba that censures the other countries, since only Cuba is free of a significant list of oppressive attributes found everywhere else, as these documents attest.
